Global 500 laureate, Mohamed Zahir, joins Maldivians in signing the Chagos petition
Malé, 21 July 2025 – Last Friday was a momentous day for Maldivians for Chagos, as legendary environmentalist and senior journalist Mohamed Zahir, popularly known by his pen name Meemu Zaviyani, has added his signature to the Chagos petition from his private studio in the Maldives capital, Malé.
A long-time champion for environmental justice, this is Zahir’s way of showing the world that he will never back down in his determination to support the Chagos cause. The ‘Maldivians for Chagos’ banner, a symbol of unity and determination, was prominently displayed on a widescreen, scoring a pride of place as he signed the petition. The ceremony underscores the growing consensus among Maldivian national leaders on the issue of reclaiming the country’s historical and sovereign rights over the Chagos Archipelago.
Zahir’s advocacy for environmental protection dates back to his school days, making him one of the most decorated public figures in the Maldives for his work on environmental causes. He wrote awareness articles in Haveeru Daily in 1986, which sparked a national conversation in the Maldives about ecological issues. These efforts garnered international recognition and accolades, resulting in the UNEP Global 500 Award in 1990 and the National Award for Public Service in 1987.
Zahir’s significant contributions in the areas of environment and energy have not gone unnoticed. The Maldivian Government awarded him the National Award of Honour, and he has also received numerous accolades from international organisations for his efforts and dedication in promoting sustainable development and public awareness.
“Having signed the petition, Zahir said the fight for the Chagos Islands is a fight of principle, of historic justice and is also significant for the state of the environment.” Decolonisation is not just a political responsibility; it is an ecological and moral necessity,” he said.
Zahir’s support for the Chagos petition is a significant milestone in the rising tide of citizen demand for justice, accountability, and the restitution of Sovereignty. His backing adds weight to the cause and underscores the urgency of the situation.
